The Correct Way to Use a VPN While Traveling (And When It Actually Saves You Money)
Not all booking sites show you different prices based on your location — but some absolutely do. I ran the tests so you don't have to waste an hour at an airport gate.
I spent about four hours one rainy Tuesday in Lisbon running a controlled VPN test across eight major booking platforms. I had a spreadsheet, a reliable VPN, six server locations, and absolutely too much coffee. The results were more nuanced than the “VPN saves you hundreds!” crowd claims — and more interesting than the “it never works” cynics insist.
Here’s what I actually found.
The Myth vs. the Mechanism
The theory behind VPN fare savings is real: airlines and booking sites can display different prices to users in different countries, partly because of purchasing power parity, local competition, and currency conversion. The problem is that “can” and “consistently do” are very different things.
When I connected through servers in India, Brazil, Poland, the US, the UK, and Japan and searched the same London-to-Tokyo route on the same dates within a 30-minute window, here’s what I found:
Sites where I saw zero meaningful price variation (under 2%): Google Flights, Kayak, Expedia, Skyscanner.
Sites where I saw meaningful variation (5% or more): Agoda (for hotels), Hotels.com on certain Asian properties, and — most surprisingly — the Renfe Spanish rail site, which showed lower prices when connecting through a Spanish IP versus a US one.
The airline booking engines themselves? Largely immune. Delta, Lufthansa, Emirates — I saw price differences of maybe a dollar or two, well within normal fluctuation noise.
Where a VPN Actually Moves the Needle
Regional Hotel Platforms
Agoda is the standout here. When I searched for a Bangkok guesthouse through a Thai server versus a US server, the Thai-IP price was about 12% lower. Same room, same dates. That’s not noise — that’s real money on a week-long stay.
The pattern holds for other Southeast Asian properties too. If you’re booking accommodation in Thailand, Vietnam, or Indonesia, it’s worth spending 90 seconds connecting to a local server before searching. You won’t always find a difference, but when you do, it’s usually worth it.
Hotels.com showed similar behavior for certain Japanese properties when I connected through a Japanese server. The effect was inconsistent — about half the properties I checked showed no change — but when it appeared it averaged around 8–10%.
Rail Booking Sites
This one surprised me the most. The Renfe site (Spanish national rail) and a handful of Eastern European rail portals showed noticeably different prices based on IP location. The practical implication: if you’re planning a multi-city train trip through Europe, check rail prices from a local IP before you book. It takes two minutes and might save you 15–20 euros on a long-haul journey.
The Google Flights Exception
Google Flights is remarkably consistent across geographies — it’s one of the few platforms that actually normalizes prices to your selected currency regardless of IP. This makes it excellent for comparison shopping but means VPN tricks won’t help you there. Use Google Flights to identify the cheapest dates and routes, then check the airline’s own site or a regional OTA with a local server to see if a better price exists.
The Methodology (So You Can Repeat It)
I’m not asking you to take my word for it. Here’s exactly what I did:
- Chose a single itinerary (London to Tokyo, 14 days out, economy, one adult)
- Used the same VPN client (Mullvad, no-logging, consistent speeds) across all sessions
- Cleared cookies and opened a new private window for each location test
- Searched within a 30-minute window to minimize dynamic pricing noise
- Recorded the lowest available price shown for the same cabin class
- Repeated for hotels: same property, same dates, same room type
The key variables I controlled for: time of day, search device, and currency display (I always selected USD for comparison). The variable I couldn’t fully control: real-time price fluctuations. But across 8 platforms and 6 locations, the patterns were consistent enough to trust.
When a VPN Is Genuinely Indispensable While Traveling
Here’s the part the “VPN = cheap flights” crowd undersells: the actual must-have use cases aren’t about saving money on bookings at all.
Public Wi-Fi security. Airport lounges, hotel lobbies, café networks — these are hunting grounds for credential theft. A VPN encrypts your traffic so that the guy in the corner with a packet sniffer gets nothing useful. This alone justifies a VPN subscription for frequent travelers. And if you’re also filing taxes, checking your bank, or buying those rail tickets mid-trip, you really don’t want to do that on an open network. (While you’re thinking about travel prep, it’s also worth reviewing what’s actually allowed through airport security — saves time at the checkpoint.)
Streaming access. Your home Netflix library, your UK iPlayer shows — geo-locked content is legitimately annoying when you’re traveling for three weeks. A VPN fixes this cleanly. I’m not advocating anything sketchy; connecting to your home country’s server to watch the shows you’re paying for is a reasonable use.
Researching your destination. If you’re planning a quiet escape — say, a low-key long weekend in Santorini — some local review sites and travel forums are region-locked or show different content. A local IP sometimes surfaces more relevant results.
What Doesn’t Work (Stop Trying These)
- Searching flights with a VPN to your destination country. I tested this extensively. Airlines serve the same global fares to nearly everyone. The cabin pricing is dynamic and based on demand, not your country of origin.
- Switching locations mid-booking. Some sites will flag this and either reset your session or serve you a cached price. Do the search first, then book without switching.
- Using a free VPN for any of this. Free VPNs are slow, log your data, and often sell it. They also get blocked by major booking platforms because their IP ranges are flagged. Spend the $5/month on Mullvad or Proton VPN.
The Honest Bottom Line
A VPN will not definitively save you money on flights. Anyone claiming otherwise is either selling you something or sharing an anecdote they haven’t controlled for. But it will occasionally — and meaningfully — save you money on hotels and rail tickets, it will protect you on public networks, and it will keep your streaming library intact.
The practical approach: get a paid VPN (Mullvad and Proton are both solid), use it always on public Wi-Fi, and before booking hotels or rail in Southeast Asia or Europe, spend two minutes connecting to a local server and checking prices in a clean session.
The real VPN travel hack isn’t a magic trick — it’s treating your location as one more variable to test before you hand over your card.
