The Best Time to Visit Cancun
I've spent Christmas week fighting for a sunbed in the Hotel Zone and I've also had a near-empty stretch of Playa Delfines to myself in September, and the difference comes down to three things: rain, sargassum, and how many other people had the same idea. Dry season is genuinely the safer bet for a first trip, but it's also the most expensive and most crowded, so the shoulder months either side of it are where the real value lives.

Cancun by season
Winter dry season (peak)
December–February
The classic postcard weather window and the one to book early for — Christmas/New Year and Presidents' Week (mid-February) sell out resorts months ahead and push nightly rates to their yearly high.
Spring dry season
March–April
Great weather but Mexican Spring Break (Semana Santa, the week before Easter) and US college spring break in March make the Hotel Zone loud and packed — go early March or wait for late April if you want quieter beaches.
Early summer shoulder
May–June
My pick for value: kids are still in school, hotel rates drop noticeably from spring peak, and Cancun's west-facing Hotel Zone beaches are less affected by sargassum than the Riviera Maya's Caribbean-facing coast.
Rainy & hurricane season
July–November
Cheapest flights and rooms of the year, but you're gambling on both storms and seaweed — good for budget travelers with flexible dates and travel insurance, riskier if you have one fixed week and no plan B.
