Fear of Flying: What a Pilot Wishes You Knew About Every Bump and Bang

I used to white-knuckle every takeoff convinced the wing was about to fall off. Then a pilot friend decoded the noises for me one bump at a time. Here's what's actually happening up there — spoiler, it's boring on purpose.

If you want to know how to get over fear of flying, I’m going to give you the thing that actually worked for me, and it wasn’t a breathing app or a glass of wine the size of a fishbowl. It was information. Specifically, a pilot named Marco who sat next to me on a delayed flight out of Milan and, watching me grip the armrest like it owed me money, just… started explaining the noises.

By the time we landed I wasn’t cured, exactly. But the panic had nowhere to live anymore. Fear feeds on mystery. Take away the mystery and it gets bored and leaves.

So let me be your Marco.

The big one: turbulence is not dangerous

I know. I know your body does not believe that. Mine still doesn’t, fully, on a bad day. But here’s the thing Marco said that rewired me: turbulence is a comfort problem, not a safety problem. It’s the air equivalent of a bumpy road. Annoying, jostling, makes your coffee jump. Not structurally threatening.

Those wings you’re staring at, watching them flex and wobble? That flex is the point. They’re designed to bend — a 787 wing can deflect several metres in testing and shrug it off. A rigid wing would be the dangerous one. The bending is the plane doing its job, like a tree in wind instead of a fence post.

And modern pilots avoid the rough stuff anyway. They get turbulence forecasts, they ask other aircraft on the route, they climb or descend or shift course to find smoother air. When they keep the seatbelt sign on, it’s not because anything’s wrong. It’s because they’d rather you not be standing in the aisle when it gets jiggly.

Decoding the scary noises, one bang at a time

This was the bit that genuinely fixed me. Every alarming sound has a dull, mechanical explanation.

  • The big CLUNK right after takeoff. That’s the landing gear retracting and locking up into the belly. It’s loud because it’s enormous metal moving. It’s supposed to be loud.
  • The whirring, grinding “barking dog” sound before takeoff on some Airbus planes. It has a name pilots actually use — it’s the PTU, a hydraulic pump, doing its little routine. Completely normal. Sounds exactly like a small angry terrier in the cargo hold. It isn’t.
  • The engines suddenly going quiet after takeoff. This is the one that gets everyone. The plane reaches a height where it pulls the power back to a normal climb setting — full thrust is only for the first push. It feels like the engines “gave up.” They didn’t. They just relaxed, same as you ease off the gas once you’re up to speed.
  • Bangs and whines on descent. Flaps extending, gear coming down again, speed brakes lifting on the wings. Lots of moving parts, lots of sounds. All part of the slowing-down choreography.
  • A sudden dip or float feeling. Usually just the plane adjusting altitude or hitting a pocket of different air. Your stomach reacts faster than your brain. Doesn’t mean anything’s falling.

The numbers your lizard brain needs

Statistics don’t soothe the body, I get it. But have them ready anyway, because the rational part of you can use them as a railing to hold.

Flying is the safest way to travel by a country mile — the drive to the airport is statistically the dangerous part of your trip. Commercial pilots train relentlessly for every failure scenario, in simulators, over and over, so that if something does go sideways it’s a procedure they’ve practiced a hundred times, not a surprise. Planes can fly perfectly well on one engine. They can glide a long way with none. The whole system is built around layers of “what if,” with backups for the backups.

What actually helps in the moment

  • Tell the flight attendant you’re a nervous flyer. I used to be too embarrassed. Don’t be. They deal with it constantly and they’re kind about it — sometimes they’ll check in on you, sometimes they’ll just give you a knowing nod when it gets bumpy that says “this is fine.”
  • Watch the crew, not the window. If the cabin crew are calmly pouring drinks during turbulence, that’s your answer. They feel a hundred of these a month. Their bored faces are the most reassuring instrument on the plane.
  • Cool air and cold water. Crank the little overhead vent onto your face and sip cold water. It genuinely interrupts the panic spiral — something about the temperature jolts your nervous system out of the loop.
  • Name the noise. When the clunk comes, say to yourself: gear. When the engines hush: power reduction. Naming it robs it of its power. This is the whole Marco method in one move.

I won’t pretend I float through every flight serene as a monk now. Bad turbulence over the Alps last winter and I was definately back to gripping the armrest. But the difference is I knew it would pass, I knew the plane was fine, and I didn’t spiral. That’s the win. Not zero fear. Manageable fear.

The plane is not trying to kill you. It’s a very large, very boring bus that happens to be in the sky, flown by people who’d genuinely rather be home for dinner. Name the noises, watch the crew’s faces, and let the bumps be bumps.
