The 10 Best Places to Watch Sunset in the World

The best sunsets are not accidents. They're the product of the right elevation, the right water or sky to reflect off, the right atmospheric conditions, and ideally a cold drink. Here are ten places that nail all of the above, ranked by total effect.

My most embarrassing travel confession: I once missed the Oia sunset in Santorini because I had read about how crowded it was and decided I was too sophisticated to wait for it. I went for a walk instead. I rounded a corner at the wrong moment, looked back at the caldera, and watched the sky turn colours I had no adequate words for while a large crowd of people in the right place had a correct and earned experience that I had self-excluded from.

I am not sophisticated about sunsets anymore. I wait for the good ones.

Here are the good ones.

1. Oia, Santorini, Greece

It is famous for a reason. The caldera at dusk, the white cubic buildings turning gold-pink, the windmills in silhouette — this is not a manufactured aesthetic, it’s a geological coincidence that happens to be extraordinary. The crowds are real; arrive two hours early, find your spot on the castle ruins at Oia’s tip, and do not leave it. The 20 minutes of actual sunset are worth it.

2. Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia

The sandstone monolith turns red, then deep red, then violet as the sun goes down — a 15-minute colour sequence that has nothing to do with any other landscape on earth. The designated Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing area is the main sunset platform; arrive an hour early and bring the good camera.

3. The Sahara Desert, Morocco (Near Merzouga)

Sand dunes in the late afternoon light have a quality that photographs cannot capture and presence can: the shadows elongate across the rippled surface, the orange deepens, and there is almost complete silence. The classic approach is a camel trek to a dune camp from Merzouga village. The temperature drops fast after the sun goes — bring layers.

4. Angkor Wat, Cambodia (Phnom Bakheng)

Angkor Wat itself faces west, which means the temple reflects the sunset light directly into you. Phnom Bakheng hill (a 10-minute hike from the base) gives you the elevated view with Angkor Wat in the mid-distance. Entry is limited to 300 people at a time — book the slot at the morning ticket office.

5. The Miradouro da Graça, Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s viewpoints (miradouros) are one of its great gifts, and da Graça is the best of them for sunsets — a residential-neighbourhood terrace above the Alfama, facing west toward the Tagus, with a kiosk that sells wine and beer and a local crowd that treats it as a daily event. None of the tourist crush of Portas do Sol. All of the view.

6. Key West, Florida

The Mallory Square sunset celebration in Key West is genuinely one of the world’s great civic rituals: musicians, performers, and a crowd of locals and tourists who gather at the dock every evening to watch the sun go into the Gulf of Mexico and applaud when it does. It’s theatrical, slightly absurd, and entirely charming.

7. Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Any elevated point in Positano looking west over the Tyrrhenian Sea will produce a sunset that merits the word spectacular. The Sponda terrace above the main beach, accessible via the path past the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is the locals’ choice. The whole hillside turns orange-pink in the last 20 minutes of light.

8. Mount Batur, Bali, Indonesia

Sunrise at Batur is the more famous experience (pre-dawn trek to the crater rim), but sunset from the peak is, depending on the cloud conditions, extraordinary — Batur’s caldera, Lake Batur, and Agung in the distance. Cloud is the variable; clear days are spectacular, cloudy days are not. Check the forecast.

9. The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

The combination of the bridge, the bay, and the Pacific light as it sets over the Marin Headlands on clear days produces one of the world’s great urban sunsets. Best viewed from the Marin Headlands (Golden Gate Viewpoint off Conzelman Road) looking back at the bridge with the city behind it.

10. The Grand Canyon South Rim, Arizona

The depth of the canyon means the sunset plays out across a mile of vertical rock, each layer a different shade of red and purple as the light shifts. Hopi Point on the South Rim is the designated sunset viewpoint; allow 30–45 minutes for the full colour transition after the sun disappears.

Which sunset is most worth the special trip? Uluru, by a small margin over Santorini — the rock’s colour change is unique in the world and the setting has an ancient quality that Santorini’s architecture (beautiful as it is) doesn’t have.

What’s the best time to arrive for Oia’s sunset? Two hours before. This sounds absurd until you try arriving 30 minutes before and discover there is literally no remaining space. For the castle ruins specifically, 2.5 hours is not too early in July.

Is there a sunset experience that’s free and underrated? Miradouro da Graça in Lisbon — free, genuinely lovely, filled with locals rather than tourists, and reliably excellent. Bring your own wine from the shop on the walk up.
