The 11 Best Cities for Cheese Toasties on a Cold, Grey Day
Forget the cheese farms and the wheels under glass. This is about the melt — the croque, the raclette scrape, the tosti you eat standing up in the rain. Eleven cities ranked by how well they fix a cold, grey afternoon.
I have a rule. When the sky goes the colour of wet concrete and my mood follows it down, I find the nearest source of bread and melted cheese and I sit in it like a cat in a sunbeam. This list is the best cities for grilled cheese — the proper, drippy, fix-your-whole-afternoon kind. Not the farm tours. The melt.
A toastie is humble food. That’s the whole point. Nobody is impressed by it, which is exactly why it never lets you down.
The cities
1. Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Dutch tosti is the unsung hero of European street food and I will die on this hill. It’s just ham and Gouda pressed flat in a machine, but in the cold canal damp it hits like a hug. Get one from a stand-up window counter near the Nine Streets for about €5. Eat it walking. The first time I did this I burned the roof of my mouth and didn’t even care.
2. Lyon, France
Croque-monsieur country. The bouchons do a version drowned in béchamel that is borderline obscene. Ask for Comté instead of the default Emmental — a few places off Rue Mercière will do it and the cheese has more bite. Expect €9-12 sitting down.
3. Geneva, Switzerland
Raclette isn’t technically a toastie but it’s molten cheese on a plate so I’m counting it. They scrape it straight off a half-wheel under a heat lamp onto potatoes and gherkins. Go around 6pm, before the after-work lot floods in. It’s not cheap — figure 25-30 CHF — but on a grey alpine evening it’s worth every franc.
4. Paris, France
Yes, Paris does the croque better than anywhere if you find the right café. Skip the touristy ones near the big sights. A backstreet brasserie in the 11th will hand you a croque-madame (the one with the egg on top) for around €11 and it’ll be the best decision you make all day.
5. London, England
The cheese toastie scene here got serious. Borough Market has a grilled-cheese stall with a queue that moves slow and is worth it anyway — three cheeses, sourdough, a bit of leek. About £8. Cold London rain plus that toastie equals a genuinely good day, which is saying alot for London weather.
6. Milan, Italy
The Italian toast — “toast” being the actual word they use — is a quiet little miracle. Cafés do a ham-and-cheese pressed thin with the crusts going crisp. Order one with your morning coffee. €4-ish. Simple. Perfect.
7. Zurich, Switzerland
Another raclette and fondue town, but Zurich also does a mean Chäschüechli, a little cheese tart, in the bakeries. Grab two for the train. The Hauptbahnhof bakeries stay open late and on a freezing night that warm pastry in your coat pocket is a small act of self-preservation.
8. Brussels, Belgium
The croque here comes oversized and the Belgians are not shy with the cheese. There’s a place near Place Sainte-Catherine doing one with a fried egg and a pile of frites alongside. Around €13. You won’t need dinner. Or possibly breakfast tomorrow.
9. Vienna, Austria
The Viennese coffeehouse does a toast that’s almost an afterthought next to the cakes, and that’s the trap. It’s great. Marble tables, a grumpy waiter, the rain on the big windows, and a hot ham-cheese toast for about €6. This is comfort food as architecture.
10. Quebec City, Canada
Across the pond now. Quebec does a grilled cheese with their squeaky cheese curds melted in, and in a January cold that genuinely hurts your face, it’s medicine. Find a diner in the old town. Order the soup too.
11. Melbourne, Australia
Their winter is our nothing, sure, but a Melbourne laneway café in July does a jaffle — a sealed toastie, edges crimped shut — stuffed with cheese and whatever else, and the coffee is the best on this whole list. About AUD 12. Worth the seat by the window watching the the drizzle.

FAQ
Is raclette really a toastie? No. But it’s cheese, melted, scraped onto carbs, and eaten when you’re cold and a bit sad. Close enough for me.
Best single cheese for a toastie? Comté if you can get it. Gouda if you can’t. Cheddar in a pinch and never feel bad about it.
One city to pick? Amsterdam. The tosti-on-the-go thing fits a grey day perfectly — you’re moving, you’re warm, you’re handheld.
Go find some melted cheese and let the weather do whatever it wants. You’ll be fine.
