The 10 Best Cities to Visit Entirely on Foot at Sunrise
A famous city at 6am, empty, is a completely different place than the same city at noon. These are the best cities for early morning walks — the ones worth setting an alarm for, when the crowds are still asleep and the streets are all yours.
The best cities for early morning walks are a secret hiding in plain sight. The trick is absurdly simple: get up before everyone else. A city that’s a sweaty, shoving nightmare at noon becomes, at 5.45am, a private film set just for you — gold light, empty squares, the sound of your own footsteps, a baker or two and nobody else.
I figured this out by accident with jet lag in Rome, awake at five, wandering out half-asleep, and finding the Trevi Fountain completely deserted. No selfie sticks. No barriers of bodies. Just me, the water, and a street cleaner who nodded good morning. I have chased that feeling in every city since, and it never gets old.
Here are the ten most worth the alarm.
The list
1. Venice, Italy
The most transformed of any city on this list. By 10am Venice is a crush; at 6am it’s a ghost-poem. Walk from San Marco — utterly empty, pigeons and a few delivery boats — out into the back lanes of Cannaregio or Dorsoduro and you’ll have whole bridges and canals to yourself, the water like glass, the light pink off the buildings. This is the Venice people think doesn’t exist anymore. It does. You just have to get up.
2. Kyoto, Japan
The famous Fushimi Inari shrine, with its thousands of red torii gates, is mobbed by mid-morning. At dawn it’s silent, misty, and genuinely sacred-feeling. Same with the bamboo grove at Arashiyama — go at first light or don’t bother. Walk the Philosopher’s Path before the city stirs. Kyoto rewards the early riser more than almost anywhere on earth.
3. Rome, Italy
My gateway drug. The historic centre is small and walkable, and at sunrise you can do the Pantheon, the Trevi, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps in a loop with barely a soul around. The morning light on travertine is something else. Grab a cornetto and a coffee standing at a bar around 7am when they open and you’ve had a perfect Roman morning before the city’s even properly awake.
4. Prague, Czech Republic
The Charles Bridge at 6am, fog often rising off the Vltava, the statues looming, not a single person flogging caricatures or souvenirs. It’s the stuff of paintings. Walk it, then climb up toward the castle through the empty lanes. By nine it’s a different, far less magical place, so guard that early hour like treasure.
5. Paris, France
A vast city, but the central walk — along the Seine, over the bridges, past Notre-Dame, through the Marais — is sublime before the traffic builds. The boulangeries open early and the smell of the first baguettes is worth the trip alone. Parisians walk fast and purposefully even at dawn; fall in step and feel like a local for an hour.
6. Marrakech, Morocco
The medina at dawn, before the souks open and the motorbikes swarm, is a revelation. The Jemaa el-Fnaa square, that pulsing chaos by night, sits almost empty and calm in the early light. You can walk the narrow lanes without being hassled or hustled, just bread sellers and cats and the first call to prayer drifting over the rooftops.
7. Edinburgh, Scotland
The Old Town’s closes and the Royal Mile, usually thick with tour groups, are atmospheric and empty at sunrise — all that dark stone and steep stairs in the soft morning light. Climb Calton Hill or even Arthur’s Seat for dawn over the city and the Firth of Forth. The famous fog (“the haar”) rolling in makes it properly gothic.
8. Lisbon, Portugal
The hills are brutal in the midday heat, so dawn is genuinely the sensible time to walk Lisbon as well as the prettiest. The light on the pastel tiles, the empty miradouros (viewpoints), the first trams rattling up the slopes. Walk Alfama’s tangle of lanes before the tuk-tuks descend. Coffee and a pastel de nata when the cafes open. Faultless.
9. Dubrovnik, Croatia
The walled old town gets genuinely unbearable when the cruise ships dock, so the early morning is your only real shot at it in peace. Walk the marble main street (the Stradun) when it’s empty and polished and gleaming, and if the city walls open early, do that loop before the heat and the hordes arrive together around ten.
10. Hoi An, Vietnam
The lantern-strung old town is gorgeous lit up at night but frantic with crowds. At sunrise it’s serene — locals doing tai chi by the river, the market setting up, conical hats and bicycles, the whole place soft and golden and yours. Get a Vietnamese coffee from the first stall to open and just sit by the water and watch the town wake.
The simple method
The window is short — roughly from first light until the cafés open and the day-crowd surfaces, so maybe an hour, ninety minutes if you’re lucky. Don’t over-plan it. Pick a dense, walkable centre and just drift, no map, no agenda, letting the empty streets pull you. Reward yourself with the first coffee of the day when the bars open. And here’s the thing nobody tells you — you’ll sleep better that night and feel like you stole a whole secret city while everyone else missed it.
Set the alarm. It’s the cheapest upgrade in travel, and definately the most underrated.
One alarm, one hour, one empty city. Get up before the crowds and you’ll see the version of the place the postcards are actually based on.
