I've based myself in Auckland across every season, and the seasonal split here is blunt: summer (Dec-Feb) is genuinely great, winter (Jun-Aug) is genuinely wet and grey, and the shoulder months either side of summer are the smart play if you want good weather without Kiwi school-holiday chaos. Summer (peak)
December–February
Best for beaches (Piha, Waiheke, Mission Bay), sailing on the Waitemata, and outdoor dining, but January overlaps with NZ's own summer holidays so ferries, hire cars, and Waiheke accommodation book out and cost more.

March–May
March is arguably the best-value month in the calendar — still summer-warm sea temperatures, harvest season in wine regions like Waiheke and Matakana, and noticeably thinner crowds than January.
